Round 2.0: Flash vs. AJAX

The first round of this battle ended and the judges argued but to no avail—no winner, so today we’re here to watch the second round of the match sponsored by dotone. Stick to your seats no ads are going to interrupt this round. Ting-Ting! Round 2! Fight:

Dotone: AJAX vs Flash, round 2, arena: Web2.0, fight!

Flickr Maps

Flickrmap.com is a web service by Mark Zeman that allows you to put a flash based world map on your own website or blog. It will then automatically search your photos at Flickr for location information and plot the photos on your own map, on your own website.

It's as simple as tagging your photos with a city and country name! Flickrmap also supports photos that have been geotagged or photos that have location data encoded in their EXIF properties.

First time use of Flash and vector based map display. Good basic work, but a bit hard to interact with.

Flash 8 Life

The Game of Life has been around for more than 30 years now, so it seems kind of pointless to implement in Flash. However, Patrick Mineault used a technique which is quite clever and works around Flash's typically dog slow math operations and array access. He simply uses a custom filter combined with blend mode operators to populate the image map. As an extra afterimages can be displayed to give a better impression of the growing pixel folks.

Gtalkr

Gtalkr is a web-based IM client that communicates with the Google Talk service. There are a couple of things that stand out about Gtalkr aside from that fact that it’s web-based. First, it incorporates indexing and searching of conversations. Second, Gtalkr is an IM client at heart, but it’s meant to tie into other webservices such as Yahoo! maps.

Google goes Flash

Google Video Search has changed their playback integration of embedded video files. They now use a combination of Javascript and Flash to present the content. Once you click on the playback icon on the bottom left of the image, the content will be replaced within the page, and any reload is necessary.

As I can remember Google is using Flash for the first time in one of their search pages. So, G: Keep on flashing!
