Transit Data in Google Maps

Integration of Transit into Maps: As of today, transit icons on Google Maps are clickable in many locations around the world! Earlier in the year, we added transit icons for subway and light rail stations in major cities, but this release goes a step further and adds bus stop information for the cities we have it for. Icons for agencies that share data with us for Google Transit show additional information (in these cities, we show bus stops on the map tiles, and clicking on an icon shows line and departure information).

Google goes Flash

Google Video Search has changed their playback integration of embedded video files. They now use a combination of Javascript and Flash to present the content. Once you click on the playback icon on the bottom left of the image, the content will be replaced within the page, and any reload is necessary.

As I can remember Google is using Flash for the first time in one of their search pages. So, G: Keep on flashing!

An evening with Googles Marissa Mayer (alan.blog-city.com)

"# The infamous 'I feel lucky' button is nearly never used. However, in trials it was found that removing it would somehow reduce the Google experience. Users wanted it kept. It was a comfort button."

Google: AJAXSLT

Code.google.com is a site for external developers interested in Google-related development. It’s where you can publish free source code and lists of our API services.

AJAXSLT is an implementation of XSL-T in JavaScript, intended for use in fat web pages, which are nowadays referred to as AJAX applications. Because XSL-T uses XPath, it is also an implementation of XPath that can be used independently of XSL-T.

Hybrid Mode

Google added another cool feature to their mapping service that will show a street overlay on top of the current satellite image. So you now can easily toggle between abstract and photo layers on maps.google.earth. Unfortunately till now it only works for the US. So, the rest of our world is waiting for...

When Google World Was Science Fiction

Excerpts from Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, circa 1992, including:
"There is something new: a globe about the size of grapefruit, a perfectly detailed rendition of Planet Earth, hanging in space at arm's length in front of his eyes... It's a piece of CIC software called, simply, Earth. It is the user interface that the CIC uses to keep track of every bit of spatial information that it owns -- all the maps, weather data, architectural plans, and satellite surveillance stuff."

heise online - Googles "Summer of Code" soll Open Source fördern
