What's new in the world wide map world?



First of all Microsofts Virtual Earth is now called Windows Live Local and inlcudes an incredible amount of new images, that are isometrically projected. You can now fly like a bird over New York, New York.

2nd: Google is developing a beta version of its fascinating Google Earth geographical satellite imagery and mapping application for Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system, sources tell AppleInsider.

And last, but not least:



A9.com developed new technology to very efficiently capture photographs of places along public streets using trucks equipped with digital cameras, and GPS. In many areas you can see images on both sides of the street and virtually walk up and down the street. So, lets walk by the Broadway.

The Quintura search client uses a visual semantic map that shows contextual relationships among words in the query. This map helps build a search query by giving hints or words to define the context of the query.

The map shows only those words that have close contextual relationships with the keywords in your query. Click a word to change your query and get relevant results that will comply with your new query.

Von Origami bin ich sehr enttäuscht. Da baut Microsoft über ein paar Wochen wirklich große Erwartungen auf – mit offiziellen Ankündigungen und allen Registern des viralen Marketing. Und dann stellen drei Hersteller auf der CeBIT Geräte der UMPC-Geräteklasse vor, die einfach nicht überzeugen. Zu groß bei der Displaygröße, die sie haben. Uninspiriertes Design. Billige Materialien.

Zuerst habe ich gedacht: es ist vielleicht noch zu früh. Auf irgendeinem Blog wurde mal ein Vergleich zu StarTrek und deren Computer Pads gemacht. Bis ich dann am Stand von Carsten Waldeck von Infoverse, der einen OQO bei sich liegen hat. Das wiederum ist der Origami, der eigentlich hätte gehypt werden sollte. Anders als die UPMCs von Samsung, Asus und Founder ist OQO ein UPC – ein Ultra PC. Weniger mobil als die aktuellen Geräte ist er nicht, Gewicht und Größe sind ähnlich. Während ich aber bei de UMPCs den Eindruck hatte, es sei an den falschen Stellen eingespart worden, macht der OQO einen perfekten eindruck: ein vollwertiges Windows XP bzw. WIndows XP Tablet Edition, ein 1GHz Prozessor, Festplatte mit bis zu 30 GB...

Vielleicht ist die Zeit wirklich noch etwas zu früh. Alle Geräte sind noch zu groß und schwer, aber OQO macht vor, dass mit den heutigen technischen Möglichkeiten sinnvolle U(M)PC-Konzepte möglich sind.



Was ich nicht verschweigen darf ist die Daumentastatur, die die UMPCs haben. In diesem Punkt sind sie OQO voraus. Das ist eine Weiterentwicklung, die sinnvoll ist. Vielleicht etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber sinnvoll.
